The UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) hosted this year’s Match Day ceremony virtually and in-person at the Health Sciences Learning Center. Dean Robert Golden, MD spoke at the ceremony, inspiring the future residents by sharing that while they have made UW a better place, their best work is yet to come as they will shape the future of healthcare.
As part of Match Day 2024, ten medical students from across the country matched with the UW Department of Radiology and will join the department as Diagnostic or Interventional Radiology residents.
In this cohort, the department welcomes eight diagnostic radiology residents and two interventional radiology residents. Five current badgers are joining the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program from the UW medical school. Among them is Joshua Martens, who has been selected as the student speaker at the school’s graduation ceremony.
Martens shared that UW was his top choice for his residency. “I chose UW for my diagnostic radiology residency because it offered a unique mix of procedural experience, variety of cases, and 1-on-1 teaching that precisely matched what I was looking for in my training.” As a UW medical student, Martens had direct experience with the department, which also helped make it his top choice. “Everyone was welcoming, dedicated, and easy to talk to, and the residents always seemed happy and well-respected by the faculty. I am excited to begin residency at a program that will allow me to develop the skills and level of independence necessary to thrive as an attending.”
UW medical students Eduardo Miranda and Lauren Penn also matched with the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program and shared what they look forward to in continuing their journey at UW– Madison.
Miranda explained that to him, the culture within the department is just as important as the educational component. “This program has such a welcoming and supportive culture. The camaraderie that I have experienced among the residents and faculty is unmatched with an amazing cohort of residents that I am excited to join. On top of that, I know that the clinical training I’ll receive will be excellent, and I am so thrilled to continue my journey to become a radiologist here.”
Penn proudly refers to herself as a “Badger Lifer,” having completed her undergraduate and now medical education at the UW. “I look forward to continuing to learn from the world-renowned faculty in the Department of Radiology and serving patients in the greater Madison community! Along the interview trail, I could not find any other program that even came close to matching the positive culture created at UW and offered all the benefits of living in Madison, so I knew that the University of Wisconsin would yet again be my #1 choice.”
Martens, Miranda, and Penn are joined in their residency cohort by fellow badgers Ben Weber and Benjamin Yeske; and look forward to sharing what makes Madison so great with incoming residents Antonio Lopez, Tanner Redlin, Anita Rong, Olivia Meier, and Alyssa Wohlfahrt.
In addition to the incoming diagnostic radiology and interventional radiology residents, the department will welcome two nuclear medicine residents. Anna Giarratana and Abhinav Patel will begin their nuclear medicine residency this summer.
