Imaging Sciences

The section of Imaging Sciences in the Department of Radiology at the University of Wisconsin is comprised of faculty and academic staff scientists who conduct research in a variety of areas, including MRI, CT, x-ray, nuclear medicine, and ultrasound imaging; contrast agent development; and ablation technique development. All section members have offices, lab space, and access to state-of-the-art research equipment and resources in the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research (WIMR) facility. In addition to conducting research, members of the Imaging Sciences section provide technical support for the imaging modalities within the department. For example, members of the Imaging Sciences section provide advice on imaging protocol development (to maximize image quality or minimize radiation dose), troubleshoot image degradation problems, conduct acceptance testing of new equipment, perform routine quality assurance testing of existing equipment, and assist with accreditation of clinical imaging programs. Section members offer support in additional areas as well, including biomedical statistics, image processing, RF coil development, and proliferation of results from ongoing research projects (as described below). Several members of this section have joint appointments in other departments, including Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Human Oncology, and Pharmaceutics. Two members of this section are employees of GE Healthcare (GEHC), but work onsite at WIMR and are Honorary Associate Fellows of the department, emphasizing the strong imaging sciences research collaboration that exists between the University of Wisconsin and GE Healthcare.
