Faculty Spotlight: Christoph Lee

Posted on July 2025

Christoph Lee, MD, MS, MBA has joined the department as the inaugural Tom Grist, MD/GE HealthCare Foundation Distinguished Chair in Radiology Research. He is also a professor in the Section of Breast Imaging and Intervention, and the department’s new vice chair of research. Prior to joining the department, Dr. Lee was a professor of radiology and founding director of the Northwest Screening and Cancer Outcomes Research Enterprise (NW-SCORE) at the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.

Where are you from?
I was born in Toronto, Canada, but grew up in the San Fernando Valley just northwest of Los Angeles, CA.

Why did you choose radiology?
Radiology is at the intersection of all of medicine. As a breast imager, I get to interpret all modalities, do image-guided interventions, and directly interact with patients on a daily basis.

What are your professional interests?
As a fellowship-trained health services and outcomes researcher, I work at the intersection of population health and medical imaging. My research interests include understanding drivers of health outcomes at the population-level, and how we can use new cancer screening and early detection technologies to improve both short- and long-term patient outcomes.

Why did you choose to work at UW–Madison?
The people and institutional resources really are exceptional. I’m very excited to become a Midwesterner after decades on both coasts.

What are your hobbies?
I have two very active middle school kids. I’m constantly running around trying to keep up with these two multi-sport athletes.
