Faculty Spotlight: Alexandra Christensen

Posted on October 2025

Alexandra Christensen, PhD joined the Section of Clinical Imaging Physics as an assistant professor (CHS) in October 2025.

While earning her master’s degree and doctorate in medical physics at UW–Madison, Dr. Christensen worked in the Quantitative Ultrasound Lab. She also planned science events as chair of the Department of Medical Physics’ Graduate Student Outreach Committee.

Where are you from?
I am from Knoxville, Tennessee. Growing up, I enjoyed many weekends hiking the Smoky Mountains as well as the occasional Dollywood trip.

Why did you choose radiology?
When I learned about medical physics as a career option, it sounded just right – utilizing my physics background to make a direct impact on human health and wellbeing. From there, ultrasound interested me as a relatively accessible and inexpensive modality. There are a lot of opportunities to advance health equity by continuing to innovate in sonography.

What are your professional interests?
I am interested in using quantitative ultrasound techniques to explore tissue microstructure, especially in women’s health applications such as understanding changes in the uterine cervix in preparation for delivery. I am also interested in evaluating clinical ultrasound quality assurance practices and implementing the best new innovations.

Why did you choose to work at UW–Madison?
As I completed my doctoral work in the Department of Medical Physics, I was very impressed with the collaborative and supportive culture here. There’s a real sense that the success of one is the success of all.

What are your hobbies?
I love gardening. I grow some vegetables, but I also enjoy discovering native plants that thrive in our yard at different times of year. On the weekends I love to ride my bike to the Chazen or explore local bookstores!
