Case: 40

Solid And Cystic Pseudopapillary Neoplasm

Show

History: 42 year old female with abdominal pain
Solution: Solid-pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas

This tumor has gone by multiple names over the years, but is currently called a solid and papillary neoplasm of the pancreas. It generally occurs in young women, and preferentially in african americans ("daughter tumor"). It is often asymptomatic, most frequently occurs in the pancreatic body and tail, and although calcium can be associated with it, it generally is not calcified. It usually is biologically non-aggressive, but about 10% will show malignant activity, including metastases. It usually has both solid and cystic areas and is often 10 cm or greater in size at the time of diagnosis. Should consider mucinous cystic neoplasm, serous cystadenoma, exophytic gastric mass, and pancreatic pseudocyst in the differential.
