Deanna (Dede) Rice began her career at University Hospital in 1986 and served in various roles at University Hospital, American Family Children’s Hospital, East Madison Hospital, and the ambulatory clinics. To celebrate her retirement, Dede reflected on her 39 years of experience.

What are some of your fondest memories with the department?
My fondest memories are all the wonderful people I have met throughout my career.  I met so many wonderful coworkers and friends that will last a lifetime.  I truly enjoyed taking care of all my patients and making them feel safe and comfortable.

Radiology is a field that evolves quickly – what are some of the most interesting changes from when you started?
One of the most interesting changes that happened since I started was developing the film in a dark room and hanging the film on the roller scope to view them. Now the images are all digital and on the Pac system.

What first drew you to radiology?
I decided to go into this field when I was working at a place that processed medical records, and I realized that I cannot do a sit-down job. I did know I wanted to work in the medical field and back then it was only a two-year program.

What advice would you offer to individuals that are interested in pursuing a career in the radiology field?
My advice to anyone interested in pursuing this career is that there is always the potential to move into different jobs and different locations. Take that opportunity and do it. Change is always a good thing.

What are you most looking forward to in your retirement?
I am looking forward to spending more time with my family and traveling with my retired husband.  I want to focus on my well-being. I would like to try some new exercise classes, doing more biking and hiking at new places. I would like to also give back to my community through volunteering.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?
UW Hospital and clinics have been a wonderful place to work. Time goes so fast. I cannot believe that I have been doing this for 39 years.
