Sanna Herwald MD, PhD

Sanna Herwald, MD, PhD grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. She obtained her undergraduate degree from Pomona College in 2010. That same year, she received a Fulbright fellowship to conduct molecular biology research at Kyoto University in Japan. She earned her medical degree at Tufts University School of Medicine and PhD in Molecular Microbiology at Tufts University Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences in 2019.

Dr. Herwald finished her internship at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco in 2020. She completed an integrated diagnostic and interventional radiology residency at Stanford University Medical Center. During her training, she conducted research in imaging-guided drainage and patient-centered care in Radiology. Dr. Herwald also served in multiple leadership roles, including as a trainee host and editor for the JVIR audio abstract podcast episodes, and as a 52-in-52 Quality Improvement team leader for a project intended to ensure easy access of relevant department policies for on-call residents.

Dr. Herwald joined the Section of Interventional Radiology as an assistant professor (tenure track) in 2025. Her professional interests include using biochemical, engineering, and non-invasive imaging techniques to predict and optimize patient outcomes after imaging-guided drain placement.
