Mentorship program helps residents connect

Demonstrating our commitment to providing an exceptional experience for our residents, the UW–Madison Radiology Department established the Resident Mentorship Program in 2023. This program pairs each first-year resident with a faculty member who provides support and helps residents make connections throughout their training.

Jade Anderson, MD and Drew Ross, MD co-hosted a game night with their resident mentees Sean Duminie, MD and Lilian Gibson, MD to get to know them.

Prior to being paired with a mentor, residents attended the department’s annual Welcome Picnic during their second week, where they got to know each other, faculty, and staff.

Once mentors were paired with mentees, they organized informal activities that allowed time for them to get to know each other.  Activities include dinners, walks and even a game night.

In the August faculty meeting, mentors introduced their resident to the rest of the faculty. The pairs will continue to meet throughout the mentee’s training.

The program achieved remarkable success last year and prompted new mentors to volunteer. Senior Vice Chair of Education David Kim, MD explained that mentors feel fulfilled by sharing their experiences to help mentees navigate their career journey and become outstanding radiologists.

First-year residents got to know each other and other members of the department at the welcome picnic.
