Case: 219

Splenic Epidermoid

Show

History: 13 yo male with abdominal fullness
Solution: Splenic cysts are rare and may be parasitic, most frequently caused by Echinococcus granulosus, or nonparasitic. Nonparasitic cysts are divided into true cysts, which exhibit an epithelial lining and secondary, so-called false cysts or pseudocysts (more common) which do not show an epithelial lining and are thought to result from trauma or hemorrhage. The differential diagnoses of splenic cystic lesions includes abscess, true cystic neoplasms, hydatid cysts, pseudocysts, post-traumatic cysts, and cystic metastases. Cystic tumors of the spleen include: hemangiomas, lymphangiomas, epidermoids and dermoid cysts. Epidermoid cysts are the rarest true splenic cyst. Usually are resected.
