Gastroschisis

Show

History: 20 yo female, routine 20 week OB US.
Solution: Gastroschisis is a full-thickness paramedian abdominal wall fusion defect, which is usually on the right side of the umbilical cord. The bowel is nonrotated in this condition and it occurs in approximately 1 in 10,000 births. It should be differentiated from omphalocele (gastroschisis is paramedian with no membrane and free floating bowel and a normal umbilical cord insertion) because omphalocele is usually associated with other anamolies while gastroschisis is generally an isolated abnormality. If the fetus is carried to term, the outcome is usually quite good after surgical fixation (on first day of life).
