Jamey Wiechert, PhD, an expert on the forefront of theranostics research and co-director of the Initiative for Theranostics and Particle Therapy, shared with Medscape how radiopharmaceuticals are changing cancer treatment. The article highlights that the treatment could become the ‘fifth pillar’ of cancer care, joining surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunology.
Dr. Weichert explained there’s been high interest because theranostic drugs target tumors directly. “Theranostics uses a tumor-selective molecule that’s injected intravenously and finds all the tumors in the body.” This also limits the impact of treatment on healthy parts of the body.
