Lisa Schmaltz, MD, member of the Community Radiology section, retired at the start of October after three decades with the University of Wisconsin Department of Radiology.
After earning her medical degree at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, Dr. Schmaltz completed her residency and fellowship at UW Hospitals and Clinics. She joined the faculty in 1996 upon completing her training.
Dr. Schmaltz contributed her expertise beyond the clinical arena, serving in significant leadership roles throughout her career. She held the position of chair of the School of Medicine and Public Health’s Clinician-Teacher Track Promotions Committee. Before her appointment as chair, Dr. Schmaltz served on the committee for seven years.
As medical director for Group Health Cooperative, Dr. Schmaltz implemented new clinical programs and technology training to improve patient care. These programs also expanded accessibility, allowing patients to receive care directly at Group Health Cooperative locations instead of being referred to an outside institution.
Her passion for excellence in radiology extended beyond the hospital walls. Dr. Schmaltz advanced the field through her participation in societies such as the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound, and the Wisconsin Radiological Society.
Dr. Schmaltz leaves a legacy of commitment to patients and dedication to improving healthcare access. Her colleagues in the Community Radiology section, and the entire department, will miss her and wish her the best in her retirement.
