The Radiology Equity Program for Medical Students program provides two students the chance to explore radiology as a specialty, connect with mentors, and engage in a scholarly project. First-year medical students from underrepresented groups in medicine can apply in March for the 6-8 week summer program.
The University of Wisconsin Department of Radiology proudly sponsors the Radiology Equity Program as part of our commitment to equity in healthcare.
Through the program, scholars will be expected to:
- Participate in a research project under the direction of a faculty mentor
- Submit research project to the Zachary Clark Radiology Research Symposium (exp May 2026)
- Submit research project to a national conference
- Attend radiology resident teaching noon conferences
- Shadow radiology clinical services (minimum of three times)
- Build connections and receive guidance with four one-on-one faculty mentoring sessions
- Attend Shapiro Summer Research Program sessions focused on gaining research skills
Participants will receive stipends as noted here.
- Internal Students: Each participant will receive $450 per week and an additional $2,000 stipend
- Students from other institutions: Each participant will receive $450 per week and an additional $3,000 stipend
- All students will be eligible to receive an additional travel stipend for accepted conference presentations
Program Eligibility
- Medical student entering their second year with an interest in pursuing radiology as a career. Open to medical students from any institution.
- Meets one or more criteria listed below:

- High level of financial need.
- First generation college student (neither parent received a baccalaureate degree).
- Students who contribute to the intellectual and cultural enrichment of the program because of their life experiences, including overcoming personal adversity or family hardship, records of extensive community service, or successful careers in other fields.
- Significant barriers to achieving higher education, such as experience in the foster care system, living in a single-parent household, having an incarcerated parent, or responsibilities for providing financial support or primary care for other household members.
Application Process
The application form for summer 2025 should be completed prior to the March 3, 2025. Through the form, applicants will need to upload:

- Personal Statement: Provide a brief description of interest in radiology, activities you are passionate about, and what you expect to gain from this opportunity. It should not be longer than one page.
