Through the Cardiovascular Imaging section, the UW Department of Radiology offers the Magnetics Resonance Imaging (MRI) Fellowship program.
Fellows receive training from renowned faculty and hands-on experience in routine and state-of-the-art MRI procedures applied to all organ systems, including cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and nervous systems. A unique aspect to this fellowship is the ability to tailor the program to each fellow’s specific needs and goals.
In addition, the Department of Radiology collaborates with the UW Department of Medical Physics in a large research program aimed at developing and applying new MRI techniques for research and patient care in cardiovascular MRI/MRA, breast MRI, neurologic MRI/MRS, and functional imaging.
Upon completion of the integrated program, you will have the knowledge and skills to direct an MRI center in either a community or academic practice.

Cardiovascular Imaging Section
While the MRI fellowship provides training and experience in all aspects of MRI, your ‘home section’ will be the Cardiovascular Imaging Section.
The Cardiovascular Imaging section has long provided innovative, advanced clinical care in non-invasive cardiovascular imaging, including cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), cardiac and coronary computed tomography (CCTA), and computed tomography angiography (CTA).
Our faculty are active and renowned locally, nationally, and internationally with over 550 peer-reviewed publications, 30 book chapters, 1200 scientific presentations, and 50 patents. Time-resolved contrast-enhanced MRA (TRICKs), pulmonary MRA for pulmonary embolism, non-contrast-enhanced MRA, four-dimensional (4D) flow MRI, low-dose CTA and CCTA, and 3D printing are just a few examples of the innovations developed by our group that have had a significant impact on clinical care locally and beyond.
Research Opportunities
Zachary Clark Radiology Research Symposium
Held in spring, the annual symposium celebrates the high-caliber radiology research conducted by our fellows, residents, and medical students.
Our internationally renowned research programs are shining embodiments of discovery. Our department played a pivotal role in earning the Wisconsin Biohealth Tech Hub designation and is on the forefront of the transformative work it funds. Our research labs and groups are innovating in such areas as machine learning, ablation and molecular imaging. Our collaboration with industry means we’re helping to build tomorrow’s technology through efforts such as evaluating GE HealthCare’s photon counting CT scanner. Our resources provide support in statistics, IRB, grant administration and study coordination.
A key element of our research efforts is partnering with our clinical enterprise to accelerate translation of discoveries into widespread clinical practice.
From helping with the research to presenting it on the national stage, opportunities to engage in research abound for fellows!
