Radiology Research Opportunities for Medical Students

The UW Department of Radiology knows the importance of providing medical students opportunities to explore the field of radiology. Through two programs, the department aims to develop future radiologists and leaders. In addition, there are a variety of Internships, Grants, and Travel Awards through societies like the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Radiology Equity Program for Medical Students

The department proudly sponsors the Radiology Equity Program for Medical Students as part of our commitment to equity in healthcare. The program provides two students the chance to explore radiology as a specialty, connect with mentors, and engage in a scholarly project. First-year medical students from underrepresented groups in medicine can apply in March for the 6-8 week summer program.

Shapiro Summer Research Program

The Department of Radiology has a longstanding history of research mentorship through the School of Medicine and Public Health Shapiro Summer Research Program. Students who complete their Shapiro project with a radiology faculty mentor or co-mentor are invited to participate in the Radiology Mentoring Program.

The Radiology Shapiro Summer Research Mentoring Program offers students the opportunity to connect with radiologists across many different subspecialties within the field, do additional clinical shadowing, and present their work to the Department. This includes:

  • Program Introduction: Students learn how to be an effective mentee and maximize their research experience
  • Small group peer mentoring sessions: Led by a rotating group of faculty radiologists, students will pitch their research, help each other troubleshoot obstacles, and provide peer support
  • Day in the Life Lecture Series: Radiologists share their journey and give a peek into their day-to-day life as a radiologist
  • Clinical shadowing: Clinical shadowing experiences in at least one or more radiology reading rooms
  • Online resources: Links to join national societies, calendar of meetings for research presentation opportunities, catalog of funding sources for travel support, and a post-program presentation and publication planning template
  • End of Summer Research Presentations: Students present their research at a noon conference to the Department in visual abstract format”
