Biography

Dr. Avey is an associate professor of radiology in the Neuroradiology Section. In 2025, he began serving as the vice chair of clinical operations. Previously, he served as associate vice chair of clinical affairs, director of fellowships, and director of head and neck imaging. His central clinical interest is in head and neck neuroradiology.

Dr. Avey has an extensive interest in medical education and has been the recipient of teaching awards for his efforts at the medical student, resident and fellowship levels. This includes a Dean’s teaching award for his work in promoting financial awareness and wellness among graduating medical students. He is a widely recognized speaker on neuroradiology topics at the national and international stage.

He moved to Neuroradiology from the Community Section in 2014. Prior to that, he completed a diagnostic radiology residency at the University of Wisconsin, where he was chief resident, and a diagnostic neuroradiology fellowship at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He is board certified in Diagnostic Radiology and Neuroradiology. His clinical interests include head and neck radiology, imaging in acute stroke, and advanced CT imaging applications.
