Biography
Dr. Knavel Koepsel obtained her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and her medical degree from University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in 2007. She completed a preliminary year in General Surgery followed by residency in Diagnostic Radiology and fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology all at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. After completing her training, she was a senior associate consultant with promotion to full consultant at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Dr. Knavel Koepsel returned to the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in 2021 and joined the Interventional Radiology section as an associate professor (CHS). She became section chief of Interventional Radiology section in 2024.
Dr. Knavel Koepsel possesses special expertise in MRI guided interventions, complex IVC filter retrieval, uterine artery embolization and lymphangiography. Other professional interests include venous reconstruction and treatment of venous insufficiency. Dr. Knavel Koepsel has authored and coauthored many articles in radiology and interventional radiology, specifically and consistently presents at national and international meetings. Dr. Knavel Koepsel was awarded the JVIR Distinguished Laboratory Investigation for 2018 and Mayo Clinic Teacher of the Year for the Interventional Radiology section in 2019. Personal interests include practicing yoga, traveling, hiking and spending time with her family. She is a strong advocate for green initiatives, equitable care and diversity and inclusion.

UW Department of Radiology performs first histotripsy-based ablation by a radiology department in the U.S.
A UW Department of Radiology team of interventional radiologists, led by Erica Knavel Koepsel, MD, performed the first clinical histotripsy-based ablation in Wisconsin since the FDA approved the procedure. Performed on January 11, 2024, it was also the first completed by a radiology department in the US.
Erica Knavel Koepsel Creates iMRI Program
Erica Knavel Koepsel, MD has created an Intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) program at UW-Madison. Dr. Knavel Koepsel has worked hard to jumpstart this new medical program, collaborating with cross-disciplinary partners to make it possible.
